What enamel types are available and how do they differ?

Enamel adds color to the lettering on your custom badge. We offer two types — soft enamel and hard enamel — each with a distinct look and feel.

Soft Enamel (Standard)

Soft enamel is colored paint applied into the engraved lettering, then baked to harden. The enamel settles slightly below the metal surface, giving the letters a subtle, indented appearance. Some people prefer this textured look, especially on traditional-style badges. Soft enamel is included with standard finishes like Nickel, Rhodium, and Gold Electroplate.

Hard Enamel (Deluxe)

Hard enamel is made from powdered glass, fired at high temperature, then polished smooth so it sits flush with the surrounding metal. It creates a glossier, more uniform surface — and can sometimes appear slightly raised. Hard enamel is included with deluxe finishes like Two-Tone, Sil-Ray™, Gol-Ray™, and Côte D’Or.

How to decide which enamel is right for you

  • Check your current badge. If you’re reordering or want something similar to what you’ve had before, look at the lettering: does it appear recessed or smooth and polished? That’s often the best guide.
  • If you're not sure or don't have a preference: Soft enamel provides a classic look and is slightly more economical. Hard enamel offers a sleeker finish and is more resistant to wear and scratches.
  • Deluxe finishes always come with hard enamel, and standard finishes come with soft enamel by default. In most cases, you can request a different enamel type for an additional charge — contact us for details.
